A satirical film magazine produced by various film studios in the USSR from 1962 to 1991 and in the CIS from 1992 to 2003. The magazine's issues consisted of various stories: feature films, documentaries (with dubbed characters), and cartoons.

“Fuse“ was a popular Soviet/Russian satirical/comedy newsreel magazine series shown in cinemas before the start of the main feature. A new issue appeared monthly from from 1962 to 2008 totaling 608 in all. Each short issue contained three segments: a documentary, a fictional, and an animated, directed by different artists. Each of the miniatures exposed the shortcomings of Soviet or Russian life: bureaucrats, careerists, bribe-takers, bourgeoisie, and scammers, managing to turn serious problems into funny ones. Sometimes humorously called “the anecdotes from the Soviet government“ in the USSR. Some of the episodes were aimed at children, and were called 'Fitilyok', “Little Fuse“.

"In Spring, 1963 Show Magazine called me and asked that I make a film on arts in New York. I told them, why did they want me to make it - didn't they know I was a bit unusual? ... 'We want something unusual,' they said. So I went out and made a newsreel on arts. Show people looked at the rough cut of the film and became very angry. 'But there is nothing about Show Magazine and DuPont fabrics in the movie,' they said. 'What has that to do with the arts in New York!' I said. The battle was short. The film was destroyed. Really, I have no idea what they did with it. This workprint of the first FILM MAGAZINE OF THE ARTS is the only print in existence, as far as I know." -- J.M.
